Sermon on God’s Design for Gender and Sexuality

Sermon Today

Opening Prayer

Our holy and gracious God,

We come before You this morning because You are our Creator and our Lord. You have given us life, breath, and every good gift. We thank You for gathering us together as Your people.

Quiet our hearts now. Remove distractions. Help us to worship You in spirit and in truth.

As we sing, pray, and hear Your Word, give us humble and teachable hearts. Shape our thinking by Scripture. Strengthen our faith. Draw us nearer to Christ.

May everything done in this service bring honor to Your name.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Pastoral Prayer

Our sovereign and holy God,

We bow before You as our Creator and Redeemer. You are righteous in all Your ways and good in all that You do. There is no confusion in You, no error in Your Word, no weakness in Your authority.

We praise You for the gift of creation — that You made us in Your image, male and female, and declared Your work very good. We thank You for the gift of marriage, for family, for order, and for purpose.

Yet, Lord, we confess that we are fallen people living in a fallen world.

We see confusion around us — but we also confess sin within us.

Forgive us for impure thoughts. Forgive us for unguarded eyes. Forgive us for careless words. Forgive us for private compromises.

Forgive men where there has been passivity, harshness, or neglect. Forgive women where there has been resentment, pride, or distrust. Forgive us all where we have resisted Your design in attitude or action.

Cleanse Your church, Lord.

Let us not be people who speak boldly about truth while living carelessly in secret. Give us integrity. Give us holiness. Give us tender consciences that respond quickly to conviction.

We pray for our marriages — strengthen them. Restore what is weak. Heal what is wounded. Guard them from temptation.

We pray for our young people — protect their minds in a culture filled with distortion. Give them courage to stand firm in truth and purity.

We pray for those struggling silently with sexual sin, shame, or confusion. Lord, draw them to Yourself. Break chains. Bring repentance. Replace guilt with the cleansing power of Christ.

We pray for our homes — that fathers would lead with humility, that mothers would serve with strength and grace, and that children would grow in obedience and faith.

We pray for our church — make us a people marked by conviction and compassion. Help us to speak truth without cruelty and show grace without compromise.

And now, as we come to the preaching of Your Word, we ask for Your help.

Give clarity in speaking. Give understanding in hearing. Give conviction where needed. Give comfort where needed. Give transformation where needed.

May Your Word do its work in us.

Exalt Christ before our eyes. Remind us that our hope is not in moral reform, but in redemption through His blood.

We submit ourselves to You now.

Speak, Lord, for Your servants are listening.

We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

God’s Design for Gender and Sexuality

Genesis 1:26–31; 2:24

Introduction

We are living in a time that is not merely confused about morality — but confused about reality.

What God has made clear, culture now debates.
What Scripture declares plainly, society now redefines.

The most basic truths about humanity are questioned: What is a man?
  • What is a woman?
  • What is marriage?
  • What is sexuality?

But the church does not take its definitions from culture.
We take them from Scripture.

If we are to think rightly about gender and sexuality, we must begin where God begins — with creation.

Because whenever creation is denied, confusion follows.

I. Creation: God Defined Human Identity

Genesis 1:27

“So God created man in his own image… male and female created he them.”

The verse begins with God created.

From that phrase flow three foundational truths:

  • We are not self-originating.
  • We are not self-invented.
  • We are not self-defining.

Identity is not discovered inwardly.
It is received from the Creator.

Authority over identity belongs to God.

1. God Created Two Sexes

The text is clear:

“Male and female created he them.”

This distinction is not cultural.
It is not evolving.
It is not socially assigned.

  • It is creational.
  • It is biological.
  • It is intentional.

The body is not accidental.
It is theology in physical form.

2. Equal in Worth, Distinct in Design

Both male and female bear the image of God.

  • Equal in dignity.
  • Equal in worth.
  • Distinct in function.

Difference is not oppression.
It is divine order.

3. Why Two Sexes?

Genesis 1:28:

“Be fruitful, and multiply.”

Two sexes exist:

  • For fruitfulness
  • For companionship
  • For dominion
  • For covenant union

Genesis 2:24 clarifies:

“A man… shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”

Sexual union belongs in marriage:

  • One man.
  • One woman.
  • One flesh.
  • One lifelong covenant.

And Genesis 1:31 concludes:

“And God saw every thing that he had made… and, behold, it was very good.”

God’s design is morally good and perfect.

  • It does not bend to fit the culture.
  • It does not change to please society.
  • It stands firm, even when culture disagrees.
  • It is true, even when it is unpopular.

Therefore authority over identity belongs to God, not man.

If God’s design is good, why the confusion?

II. Corruption: Sin Distorted God’s Design

Genesis 3 answes this:

  • Sin entered — and distortion followed:

1. Sin Distorted Roles:

  • Adam became passive.
  • Blame replaced responsibility.

And the pattern continues:

  • Passive men avoiding leadership; Eli, Ahab, Barak, Samson, Solomon.
  • Abusive men distorting authority; Lamech, Abraham, Lot, Jacob, Nabal.
  • Women pressured to reject biblical femininity; Eve, Jezebel.
  • Role confusion replacing order.

2. Sin Distorted Desire:

Humanity suppresses truth and rejects God. Romans 1

And when God is rejected, desire becomes disordered.

Sexual immorality flows from this exchange:

  • Fornication
  • Adultery
  • Prostitution
  • Incest
  • Rape
  • Homosexual practice
  • Pornography
  • Lust of the heart

Sex, designed as a sacred union within marriage, is now reduced to a mere pursuit of physical desire.

3. Sin Distorted Identity

When people claim the right to define themselves; it is not merely social crisis.

It is humanity rejecting God’s authority over identity.

One visible expression of this rejection today is the rise of LGBTQ+ identities.

When God’s design for male and female is denied or redefined, identity becomes unstable.

  • Roles become confused.
  • Desire becomes disordered.
  • Identity is redefined by culture or self.

The LGBTQ+ movement, like other forms of sexual rebellion, is a symptom of humans attempting to redefine what God has clearly defined.

t is the creature attempting to redefine what God has defined.

When self becomes ultimate authority, identity becomes unstable.

The confusion we see around us today, is the natural fruit of rejecting the God.

But church, we must speak honestly:

Sexual sin is not only “out there.”

  • It is in hidden thoughts.
  • Secret devices.
  • Quiet compromises.

The church must not only preach — we must examine ourselves.

III. Redemption: How the Church Must Live

1. Pursue Holiness

1 Corinthians 6:20:

“Glorify God in your body.”

Our bodies belong to Christ.

Holiness means:

  • Purity before marriage
  • Faithfulness within marriage
  • Guarded thoughts
  • Disciplined desires

Before condemning cultural sin, we must confront personal sin.

2. Defend the Truth

Truth is not hatred.
Silence is not love.

To affirm that God created two sexes is not cruelty — it is Scripture.

To affirm that marriage is between a man and a woman is not intolerance — it is creation order.

We must be clear.
But clarity must be joined with humility.

3. Proclaim the Gospel

1 Corinthians 6 lists serious sexual sins. But it continues:

“And such were some of you: but ye are washed…”

That is hope.

No sin is beyond cleansing.
No confusion is beyond Christ’s authority.

Christ redeems adulterers.
Christ redeems the immoral.
Christ redeems the ashamed.

The gospel does not merely adjust behavior.

It gives new identity.

Closing Appeal

Brethren, this message is not about winning arguments.

It is about submitting to God.

God created us.
God defined us.
God designed our bodies.
God established marriage.
And God will judge how we use what He made.

The question is not, “What does culture say?”
The question is, “Will we submit to what God has said?”

Some of us must repent — not of public rebellion, but of private compromise.

Some speak strongly about cultural confusion while neglecting responsibility at home.

Some resist the distinct callings God has given — not because Scripture is unclear, but because pride resists submission.

Judgment begins at the house of God.

You cannot affirm God as Creator and reserve the right to redefine yourself.

You cannot claim Christ as Lord and refuse His authority over your body.

But hear the hope:

“And such were some of you: but ye are washed…”

Washed means cleansed.
Washed means forgiven.
Washed means made new.

If you are struggling — run to Christ.
If you are confused — seek Him.
If you are compromising — repent today.

Not excuses.
Not blame-shifting.
Repentance.

God’s design is good.
Sin distorts it.
Christ restores it.

Let us bow before our Creator.
Let us submit to our Redeemer.
And let us glorify God in our bodies and in our lives.

Amen.

Closing Prayer

Our holy and sovereign God,

We come before You not as critics of the world,
but as sinners in need of mercy.

You are our Creator.
You formed us.
You determined our days.
You assigned our bodies.
You established Your design — and You called it good.

Forgive us for the ways we have resisted Your authority.

Forgive us for secret sins.
Forgive us for hidden lust.
Forgive us for impure thoughts.
Forgive us for compromise in private and boldness only in public.

Forgive men for passivity, pride, and neglect.
Forgive women for resentment, distrust, and rebellion.
Forgive us all where we have redefined what You have clearly spoken.

Lord, cleanse Your church.

Search us and try us.
Expose what we excuse.
Convict what we conceal.
Break what must be broken.

But do not leave us in conviction alone.

Thank You that Christ came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Thank You that there is washing.
Thank You that there is forgiveness.
Thank You that there is new life.

Where there is confusion, bring clarity.
Where there is bondage, bring freedom.
Where there is shame, bring cleansing.
Where there is rebellion, bring surrender.

Teach us to glorify You in our bodies.
Teach us to honor You in our marriages.
Teach us to pursue holiness without hypocrisy.
Teach us to speak truth without cruelty.

Let this church be marked by purity, conviction, humility, and grace.

We bow before You now as our Creator and our Redeemer.

Have Your way in us.

For the glory of Christ.

Amen.
