English and Swahili Teachings on Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit: A Reformed Biblical Teaching Outline

1. The Person of the Holy Spirit

  • The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Holy Trinity, co-equal and co-eternal with the Father and the Son (Matt. 28:19; Acts 5:3–4).
  • He is a divine Person, not an impersonal force (John 14:16–17; Eph. 4:30).
  • He is infinite in being, possessing all divine attributes: eternal, omniscient, omnipresent, and all-powerful.
  • He proceeds from the Father and the Son (Filioque) and is to be worshiped and glorified (John 15:26).

2. The Work of the Spirit Before Pentecost

  • In the Old Covenant, the Spirit came upon certain individuals selectively and temporarily for particular offices or tasks—e.g., kings, prophets, craftsmen (Judg. 14:6; Ex. 31:3).
  • His presence foreshadowed the greater indwelling to come in the New Covenant.
  • He was active in the conception of Christ, and in empowering His earthly ministry (Luke 1:35; Luke 4:1, 14).
  • The Spirit also inspired Scripture and enabled prophetic revelation (2 Pet. 1:21).

3. The Outpouring of the Spirit at Pentecost

  • At Pentecost, the Spirit was poured out upon the Church, fulfilling Old Testament prophecy (Joel 2:28–29; Acts 2).
  • This marked the transition from the Old Covenant to the New, inaugurating the age of the Spirit.
  • All believers now receive the permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:9; 1 Cor. 3:16).
  • This outpouring was once-for-all, not to be repeated.

4. Regeneration: The Spirit's Sovereign Work

  • Regeneration is a monergistic act of God—the Spirit gives new birth apart from human effort (John 3:5–8; Titus 3:5).
  • It is the beginning of salvation applied, enabling faith and repentance (Ezek. 36:26–27; John 1:13).
  • Without regeneration, no one can see or enter the kingdom of God.

5. The Spirit's Work in Salvation

  • He effectually calls the elect through the gospel (Rom. 8:30; 2 Thess. 2:14).
  • He applies the redemption purchased by Christ to the believer (1 Cor. 6:11).
  • He gives faith and repentance as gifts of grace (Phil. 1:29; Acts 11:18).
  • He unites us to Christ, adopts us into God’s family, and seals us for the day of redemption (Eph. 1:13–14).

6. Sanctification by the Spirit

  • The Spirit sanctifies the believer both positionally (set apart in Christ) and progressively (growing in holiness) (2 Thess. 2:13).
  • He works through the ordinary means of grace: the Word, sacraments, prayer, and fellowship (Acts 2:42).
  • Though believers cooperate, sanctification is ultimately God’s work in us (Phil. 2:13; Heb. 13:20–21).

7. Assurance by the Spirit

  • The Spirit assures believers of their adoption and salvation (Rom. 8:16; Gal. 4:6).
  • Assurance is grounded in:
    • God’s promises in Scripture
    • The internal witness of the Spirit
    • The evidence of sanctification (1 John 3:14).
  • Believers may struggle with assurance due to sin or weakness, but their justification is secure in Christ.

8. The Fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22–23)

  • True evidence of the Spirit’s indwelling is godly character, not signs or experiences.
  • The Spirit produces fruit in three directions:
    • Toward God: love, joy, peace
    • Toward others: patience, kindness, goodness
    • Toward self: faithfulness, gentleness, self-control
  • These grow gradually as we walk by the Spirit and mortify the flesh.

9. The Spirit and the Word

  • The Spirit is the author of Scripture and never contradicts it (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:21).
  • He illumines the minds of believers to rightly understand and apply the Word (1 Cor. 2:12–14).
  • He guides through Scripture alone (sola Scriptura), not through new revelations or mystical impressions (Ps. 119:105; John 16:13).

10. The Spirit and Prayer

  • The Spirit helps our weakness in prayer and intercedes for us according to God's will (Rom. 8:26–27).
  • He teaches us to pray with reverence, confidence, and submission (Eph. 6:18).

11. The Spirit in the Church

  • He unites believers into one body—the Church (1 Cor. 12:13).
  • He appoints overseers and elders (Acts 20:28).
  • He governs and empowers the Church’s mission through the Word and providence (Acts 13:2–4).
  • His work continues in the Church through the faithful preaching of the gospel and the administration of the sacraments.

12. The Gifts of the Spirit

  • The Spirit gives spiritual gifts to every believer for the edification of the Church (1 Cor. 12:4–7; Rom. 12:6–8).
  • These include: teaching, exhortation, service, giving, leadership, mercy, discernment, wisdom, and more.
  • Purpose:
    • To build up the body in unity and maturity (Eph. 4:12–13)
    • To glorify God, not self (1 Pet. 4:10–11)

Cessation of Sign Gifts

  • The miraculous sign gifts (tongues, prophecy, healing) were given to confirm the apostolic message (Heb. 2:3–4; 2 Cor. 12:12).
  • These ceased after the apostolic era, as the canon of Scripture was completed (1 Cor. 13:8–10).
  • Today, the Spirit works through ordinary means, not extraordinary signs.

13. Discovering and Using Gifts

  • Gifts are discovered through serving in the local church and confirmed by the body.
  • They are to be used in humility, with the purpose of edifying the Church and glorifying God (Rom. 12:6–8).
  • All gifts are for the common good, not personal status.

14. Commands Concerning the Spirit

  • Walk in the Spirit—live according to His leading (Gal. 5:16–25).
  • Do not grieve the Spirit by sin or disobedience (Eph. 4:30).
  • Do not quench the Spirit, especially through neglect of the Word or resistance to conviction (1 Thess. 5:19).

15. The Sin Against the Holy Spirit

  • The unpardonable sin is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit—knowingly and willfully attributing the work of Christ to Satan (Matt. 12:31–32).
  • In our day, it refers to final, hardened unbelief and rejection of the gospel.
  • True believers cannot commit this sin.

16. The Holy Spirit Glorifies Christ

  • The Spirit’s primary work is to glorify Jesus Christ (John 16:14).
  • He points sinners to the Savior and sanctifies saints into Christ’s image.
  • He never leads contrary to Scripture, nor seeks attention to Himself, but always exalts Christ.

17. Symbols of the Holy Spirit in Scripture

  • Water – life and cleansing (John 7:38–39)
  • Fire – purifying power (Matt. 3:11)
  • Oil – anointing for service (Isa. 61:1)
  • Wind – invisible and sovereign power (John 3:8)
  • Dove – peace and purity (Matt. 3:16)
  • Seal – security and ownership (Eph. 1:13)
  • Voice – divine guidance (Acts 13:2)

18. How the Spirit Is Given

  • Given to every elect believer by grace, not by works (Eph. 2:8–9; Gal. 3:14).
  • Comes through faith in Christ alone (Rom. 10:17).
  • This is a sovereign act of God’s will—not a result of human effort (John 1:12–13).
  • No second baptism or spiritual initiation is needed.

19. Living a Spirit-Filled Life

  • To be filled with the Spirit means to submit to His rule through the Word (Eph. 5:18).
  • Evidences include:
    • Worship and thanksgiving
    • Loving obedience
    • Joyful witness
    • Growth in holiness
  • A Spirit-filled life is not emotional excess, but consistent, humble, Christ-centered living.
