DAY 4 – Fruit Explained (Part 2)
Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness, Temperance
Main Passage: Galatians 5:22–23
Memory Verse: Proverbs 3:5 — “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
Big Idea: These fruits help us behave toward others like Jesus.
1. Longsuffering (Patience when annoyed)
Meaning: Waiting without anger. Being calm when people irritate you.
Bible Proof
- God is patient with us — 2 Peter 3:9: He is “longsuffering to us-ward.”
- Jesus showed patience — 1 Timothy 1:16 speaks of Christ’s “longsuffering” toward sinners.
- We must be patient with others — Ephesians 4:2: “with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love.”
Slum Example:
When someone keeps stepping on your foot in a crowded matatu, you don’t fight or insult—you stay calm.
2. Gentleness (Soft, kind actions)
Meaning: Treating people kindly in words and actions.
Bible Proof
- God is gentle with us — Psalm 18:35: “Thy gentleness hath made me great.”
- Believers must be gentle — 2 Timothy 2:24: God’s servant must be “gentle unto all men.”
- Jesus was gentle — Matthew 11:29: He is “meek and lowly in heart.”
Slum Example:
Helping a younger child carry water or speak kindly to someone who is sad.
3. Goodness (Doing right; honesty)
Meaning: Choosing what is right, even when others choose wrong.
Bible Proof
- God is good — Psalm 34:8: “O taste and see that the LORD is good.”
- We must do good — Galatians 6:10: “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men.”
- Goodness is righteousness — Romans 15:14: believers are “full of goodness.”
Slum Example:
Returning something you found instead of keeping it, even when no one is watching.
4. Faith (Trusting God; reliability)
Meaning: Believing God’s Word and being dependable.
Bible Proof
- Real faith trusts God — Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the LORD…”
- Without faith we cannot please God — Hebrews 11:6.
- Faith shows in obedience — James 2:17: “Faith without works is dead.”
Slum Example:
Trusting God to provide school fees or food, even when your family is struggling.
5. Meekness (Strength under control)
Meaning: Not fighting back to show power. Choosing peace instead of pride.
Bible Proof
- Jesus was meek — Matthew 11:29; Matthew 21:5: “thy King cometh… meek.”
- Meekness calms trouble — Proverbs 15:1: A soft answer turns away wrath.
- We must put on meekness — Colossians 3:12.
Slum Example:
Someone insults you at school—you don’t revenge; you stay calm and walk away.
6. Temperance (Self-control)
Meaning: Saying “NO” to wrong desires—control in words, actions, anger, appetite.
Bible Proof
- Temperance is required — Titus 2:12: “live soberly, righteously, and godly.”
- A person without self-control is weak — Proverbs 25:28: “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down.”
- The Spirit gives self-discipline — 2 Timothy 1:7.
Slum Example:
Not stealing food, not fighting when angry, not joining friends in wrong behaviour.
Expanded Activities (Slum-Friendly)
1. Patience Queue Game
Children line up quietly. Anyone who pushes starts again. Reward those who wait patiently.
2. Gentleness Test
Pass a balloon around the circle using only fingertips. If it bursts, explain how harshness “breaks” others.
3. Goodness Challenge
Each child shares one right choice they made this week—even a small one.
4. Meekness Walk
Walk with a cup of water on the head or hand. Teaches calmness and controlled movement.
5. Temperance Freeze
Children dance. When the leader says “STOP!”, they freeze immediately. Teaches self-control.
