Paragraph 1
Transliteration
Ve-haya bi-ymei avoteichem be-vagad, be‘ir ha-gedolah, ve-yihyu sham shnei aḥim:
eḥad ashir u-shemo ‘Ali-Baba, ve-eḥad me’od ‘ani u-shemo Kassim.
Pesim, pesim, lo hayah lo eved rav, ve-af ‘al-i-kivsa eved kol yamav be-mavo ‘ashirim.
Translation
And it happened in the days of your ancestors in Baghdad, the great city, that there were two brothers there:
One was wealthy, named Ali Baba, and the other was very poor, named Kassim.
Kassim had many servants, while Ali Baba had none, and all his days he lived among the rich as a simple laborer.
Paragraph 2
Transliteration
Vayhi yom eḥad ve-‘eved ‘Ali-Baba be-kev ha-‘atsim be-qerev he-harim, ve-ra’ah ḥeil anashim rokhvim aleihem.
Ve-yirah ‘Ali-Baba me’od, ve-ya‘al ‘al ‘ets ‘al ‘ets la‘al.
Le-hatsil et ‘atsmo ve-et shev’lo miyadam.
Translation
And one day Ali Baba was gathering wood among the mountains, and he saw a band of men riding together.
Ali Baba became very frightened, and he climbed up a tall tree.
He did this to save himself and his load from them.
Paragraph 3
Transliteration
Ve-hitpalel ‘Ali-Baba la-‘elohav ve-yomar: “El Na, re’eini!”
Ve-yir’u ha-‘anshei ha-‘arov et ha-m‘arah asher ba-makom ha-hu ve-yas’ru me-aleihem et avne ha-‘atsim.
Translation
Ali Baba prayed to God and said: “Please, see me!”
And the bandits saw the cave that was in that place and unloaded the wood from their animals.
Paragraph 4
Transliteration
Ve-yikru ha-‘arov: “Petah Sésame!”
Ve-niftaḥ ha-‘even be-qolah, ve-yiknasu ha-‘arov el ha-m‘arah.
Ve-hineh ha-‘even nistam.
Ve-yishvu sham ‘ad she-asu et darkam.
Ve-ḥazru ve-yikru: “Sagor Sésame!”
Ve-nisgar ha-‘even, ve-nas’u le-darkam ve-yasilu et ha-merḥav.

Translation
And the bandits called out: “Open, Sesame!”
And the stone opened at their voice, and the bandits entered the cave.
And behold — the stone closed.
They remained there until they finished their affairs.
Then they returned and called out: “Close, Sesame!”
And the stone shut tight, and they set off on their way, clearing the area.
And the bandits left and sealed the cave.
Paragraph 5
Transliteration
Ve-yered ‘Ali-Baba min ha-‘ets, ve-yigash el ha-‘even be-ḥadlah.
Ve-yikra: “Petah Sésame!”
Ve-niftaḥ ha-‘even be-qolah, ve-ya‘al ‘Ali-Baba el tokh ha-m‘arah.
Ve-ra’ah sham or rav, be-qotah be-or gadol.

Translation
Ali Baba climbed down from the tree and approached the stone cautiously.
He called out: “Open, Sesame!”
And the stone opened at his voice, and Ali Baba entered the cave.
Inside he saw great light shining upon great treasure:
Vessels of silver and gold, and fine garments.
Ali Baba exclaimed: “Great God, do not abandon me! Allow me to take some provisions!”
Paragraph 6
Transliteration
Ve-lakha ‘Ali-Baba ha-kesef ve-yikḥaḥ bagad be-yadav u-va‘atsma u-tsimel et ha-kesef.
Ve-yaman ‘alav et ha-gamal.
Ve-lakha ‘etsim ve-‘etsim ve-ya‘al el ha-‘ir be-khol ha-mas’o.

Translation
And Ali Baba took silver and wrapped it in a cloth with his own hands, hiding it skillfully.
He loaded it onto his donkey.
Then he gathered wood and more wood, and he returned to the city with all his burden.
He called: “Open, Sesame!”
The stone opened, and with joy and excitement he left the cave, then closed the stone again.
And he went out safely into the open.

Transliteration
Ve-yeshev ‘al-i le-kivsa be-veito ve-yitten le-ishto et avnei ha-zahav ve’et kol ha-kesef.
Va-tomar ishto elav: “Mah kol ha-devarim ha-eleh? Me’ayin metzata otam?
O ha-gevayaḥ ḥamas ḥamas ish la-kḥat otam?”
Translation
He sat in his house, and he gave his wife the gold stones and all the money.
His wife said to him: “What are all these things? Where did you find them?
Did you take them by force from someone? Did anyone suffer because of you?”
Paragraph 2
Transliteration
Va-ya‘an ‘al-i-kivsa ve-yomer: “Agid lakh ha-kol im bakhart beiti im oti, ve-lo tavi‘i oti le-khol makom, o lo tovi, o lo yode‘a ma hayiti ‘osheti.”
U-ma‘an kerakh asher akhira beit re‘i ve-lo yode‘a ve-lo yad‘i ve-lo ashmi‘a et devarai le-adam.
Ve-sipar le-ishto et kol asher ba-lo ba-me‘arah – le-yelikhah ha-rosh u-le-rekh ha-lev.
Bechi gadol she-lo haya ra’ah miyamav.
Translation
And the man of the lamb answered her and said:
“I will tell you everything — if you choose my house with me, and do not drag me anywhere, and do not pressure me, and do not demand to know what I did.”
So that nothing will cause harm in the house of my fellow, and no one will know or hear my words.
And he told his wife everything that had happened to him in the cave — causing her head to spin and her heart to tremble,
with a great cry, such as she had never heard in her life.
Paragraph 3
Transliteration
Va-yihi aḥar yamim u-va-u pesim eshet al beit ‘al-i-kivsa.
Ve-ra’atah kol kelav kesef.
Ve-lo amrah davar le-eshet ‘al-i-kivsa.
Ve-haya she-’ir’eh kelav kesef be-beit ahiv kemah.
To’amar lo: “Aḥi sheli, ish yaḥam betekha yom be-yom be-yetero kelav kesef gadol.
He’elakh oto ki al gavah aḥiv haayam ish la-khat kelav kesef kaze?
Ve-atah lo yadata — lo mi keli, mi odoti kelav kesef ahoray?”
Ve-yikḥu bo le-ḥazek et dvarav, ve-ylekh el beit aḥiv ve-ra’ah et ha-kesef ha-rav asher ra’ah sham.
Ve-yikhazek kol ha-devarim she-ra’ah sham.
Translation
And after some days, Pesim’s wife came to the house of the man of the lamb.
She saw all his silver vessels.
But she said nothing to the man’s wife.
When the man saw the silverware in his brother’s house in such quantity,
she said to him: “My brother, a stranger comes into your house day by day with a great amount of silver vessels.
Did he give them to you? Has your brother become a man who steals such silver vessels?
And you did not know — not from which vessel nor from which person these silver vessels came?”
They urged him to strengthen himself, and he went to his brother’s house and saw the great amount of money there.
And every detail he saw strengthened his suspicions.
Paragraph 4
Transliteration
Va-yetse el beit aḥiv.
Ve-qolam lo yatsa el beit aḥiv.
Ve-yomer: “Havet li pa‘amim she-ha’avak li shem.
Hashavti li shem alah.”
Ve-amad be-beitkha ve-ro’eh keli kesef.
Ve-zara‘ et ha-kesef.
Ve-hi tavi’uha et ha-kesef.
Ve-hishmi‘a et ha-gavah me’od ish la-khat kelav kesef.
Aḥah!
Translation
He went out toward his brother’s house.
And all the rumors did not depart from his brother’s house.
He said: “Bring me evidence, for people speak of my name.
They have raised my name in suspicion.”
He stood in his brother’s house and saw the silver vessels.
He scattered the money.
And they brought the money to him.
And with a loud voice he declared that someone had stolen silver vessels.

Paragraph 5
Transliteration
Va-yomer la-adiv: “Lo hodeita li ha-kol.
Mah kara meshur le-petaḥ ha-avod?”
Ve-ya‘ov ‘al-i-kivsa et aḥiv ve-yaged lo et ha-kol.
Translation
He said to the nobleman: “You did not tell me everything.
What happened that forced open the truth of this matter?”
And the man of the lamb loved his brother and told him everything.

Translation
And when these things happened, Pesim began to say to others:

Pesim rose early in the morning and prepared the animals so they could carry the stones and the money.

Honor grew for him day by day — and his sons prospered with great respect.
They took nothing harmful from the cave.
Pesim spoke to the stone and said to it: “Alas!”

Translation
He walked in the marketplace and began shouting everything aloud:
“What a wonderful book! What great beauty! How fine these garments are!”
And he collected money without a book, and stones, and gold, and many clothes, placing everything in one spot inside the cave.
He walked around proudly and glorified himself in his heart, saying: “How wise I am, and how wealthy I am!”

Ve-‘amad pesim lifnei ha-avanim u-petah pesim le-ma‘an yeshpo.

Translation
He stood before the stones and tried to open them so he could escape.

He shouted with a loud voice: “Open, stone!”
But the stone did not open.
He strengthened his voice and cried: “Open, heavy stone!”
Still it did not open.
He screamed even more and shouted: “Open, hollow cup!”

Translation
But even then, it did not open.
He said: “What can I do? There is no water to drink here, and I cannot leave this place.

Translation
And it happened that when Pesim prayed to his God, forty prophets sat among the prophets.
On the next day they entered the cave and saw the money gathered in one place within it.
They saw emptiness — they lifted their eyes and saw nothing.
They sat without accepting anything.
Pesim carried his garments, and the garments with the great sum of money that was in that cave.
They revealed knowledge of one who was trustworthy, who bore the vessel, and they understood that he was the great man in the land.
Paragraph 5
Transliteration
Ve-yavo eḥad u-devarav be-kerev ha-me‘arah lo matza — amar: “Yesh od pesim la-ma‘aseh zot.”
Ve-nasa et ha-kesef ve-kesef mah hu zeh eḥad eḥad.
Ve-kara ‘al pesim kol halayla ve-hu shav eḥad sham ve-hu met.
Translation
One man entered, and his words within the cave were not found — he said: “There is still another Pesim for this matter.”
He took the money, piece by piece.
He called out for Pesim the whole night, but Pesim lay there alone — and he died.
Paragraph 6
Transliteration
Ve-yikra eḥad al-pesim ba-layla — ve-hu eḥad shav ve-hu met.

Someone else came and found him sitting in his house, and removed the forty (items), the garments, and the prophets all that day.
And Pesim accomplished three pleasant days — his sons in the heavens for all.
